I typically use 8hrs of caching for the static files and on-the-fly compression. Makes a big difference since the browser doesn't request the files at all any more.<br /><br />Using this setup I can also easily enforce https so that all requests using the http protocol are automatically rewritten to https. Also, we can redirect automatically to the homepage of the application. <br /><br />Setting up ssl is easy, too. Some of the things are possible with Tomcat, too. But you would need additional extensions like a url rewriting filter. It is just a lot easier with Apache out of the box. <br /><br />Cheers, <br />~Dietmar.
